The political class had all expected Senator Darrel Aubertine to run for Congress in the soon to be vacant 23rd CD.....All but Ted Ford who two weeks ago said he thought Darrel would not run.
Turns out Ted
was right and the rest of us were wrong. Senator Aubertine announced today he is not running, setting off a wave of speculation on just who the Democrats will field in the 23rd.
Republicans this week nominated Diedre Scozzafava, a friend of Aubertine and some speculate that the prospect of trashing a friend just to win didn't sit well with the Darrel Aubertine who long has placed family and friends high on his list of priorities.
Whatever the reason, and whenever it was made, an awful lot of people thought he was running, leading to the conclusion his decision came very late.
Aubertine was widely thought to be the best prospect the Democrats had to win the seat which has been in Republican hands since 1871.

Isn't it clear that by Dem insiders floating McGrath earlier that he is in the next best position? Plus, according to the Watertown Times, he has money to fund a race.
So, it is about the money - let's ask Doheny about that, shall we? LOL
Sidenote: Mayor Graham's next hardened prediction be will be?
The Sun no longer will set in the West.
Big Surprise... Dems care about their constituents and their Country... and the GOP cares about what??
They care only about themselves, and their morally bankrupt Partners...like Nixon, Reagan, and the Bush's.... and the Rich, and the HMO's, and the Pharmaceutical companies, and Wall Street....
Thank God that the next generation sees through their Lies, and self-interest...
The GOP is going the way of the Whigs, and the Know-Nothing Party....obsolete and resigned to the dust of History...
This is the first time I have chuckled at the NRCC ads against Aubertine, as the ads continue to run after Senator Aubertine's announcement.
Another example of wasteful spending when one chooses to go negative early in a campaign.
Has anyone notified robo-call yet?
Aubertine's announcement is welcome news for the North Country. As a member of the Assembly and of the Senate he has shown that his interests go far beyond party dictates and center on what is best for local needs. We are fortunate that his ego did not get in the way.
Spot on, just say Juston I was freezing cold ....I guess I will tell you what my next prediction is Doheney vs Darrel 48th.You are slippen, thanks for taking my Phone calls.Oh ya can I get a deck over on my land or adleast a date when construction is suppose to begin next to it.........sorry I could not resist........
huh?
I watched Ms. Scozzafava during the June hearings on reduction of Corrections Officers sit along the back wall and play with her cell phone almost the entire time.. What was she doing.. getting information on John McHugh's appointment. Did she care what was going on in her own backyard that day.. NO !!! I was surprised she showed up in Gouverneur for the hearings there. Can she serve our 11 counties in the U.S. Congress... I don't think so. She will be a NRCC pawn, not a Representative for us. Remember the NRCC answer for any U.S. problem solving in Congress... "NO"
After all they are the "Hoover Party"
What do the NY Conservatives and the Government of North Korea have in common?
Jim Kelly: "The girl (Scozzafava) stands for absolutely nothing," he said. "She's a little assemblywoman that's part of that Albany mess. The conservative base is going to flee from her. This is going to be a total collapse for the state Republican Party."
North Korea's foreign ministry: fired back, calling Clinton a "funny lady" who sometimes "looks like a primary schoolgirl and sometimes a pensioner going shopping." The ministry was quoted as calling her remarks "vulgar" and saying "she is by no means intelligent."
Hmmmmm, coincidence? I think NOT!
I think Darrel realizes that there has been a shift in the wind moving decidedly against the socialists in Washington D.C. and wants to play it safe.
His decision has been made, only time will tell if there were ulterior motives for staying in Albany. I for one, am not looking forward to the out of area political hacks from each party, coming back into our area for another election, special or regular, or all the he said she said political ads.
Reasons that Darrel chose not to run:
1. He looked at the polling. Word is Dede has a poll that shows her trouncing Darrel, even with the gay marriage issue. Remember, no one knows Darrel is "one of us" south and east of the Oswego County line.
2. The threats. Liz B reports Darrel had all but decided to go, but after huddling with Malcolm Smith, John Sampson and Gov. Paterson --Albany's democrat brain turst-- he abruptly changed his mind. What threats did they level against him.
3. The fears. Darrel found he didn't have the stomach to go through another bruising campaign, this time run by killer DC politicos.
4. The promises. See above re the Paterson-Sampson-Smith meeting. Aubertine has been known to covet an appointment as state Ag Commissioner. Did Paterson promise to deliver after the 2010 election?
Reread Aubertine's statement and his anger is palpable. It's clear he is not comfortable with his decision and appears to have made it under duress.
